Day 12 - Growing Up

There aren’t many things in life that are inevitable, but unfortunately, growing old is one of them. When I was younger, I always dreamed of getting older because it seemed like the ‘cool’ thing to be. Older people were able to experience things that I couldn’t as a child, which frustrated me. I wished I could grow older so that I could be treated like an adult, instead of a kid. I eventually realized that being an adult isn’t all what I expected it to be, and that it had its flaws like being a kid did.

I still think everything that I did before, but I also know now that being older comes with more responsibilities that kids don’t have to deal with. Adults have to deal with the fact that they need to support themselves by working all the time. When I was little, I never thought of what they did, but more that they didn’t have to go to school like me. Now, I wish I could stay like this forever, where school is my only worry. I don’t want to have the worries of finding a job when I get older, or having to live on my own and support myself.

Also, as a kid there’s room for making mistakes, but as you grow older, there’s less room for mistakes without having possible consequences. Although I’ll probably like being older, I don’t think I’ll like all the responsibilities that come with it. Like people say, growing old is inevitable, but growing up is optional. I like this statement because even though you have to get older, it doesn’t mean that you have to act that way, because in your heart, you can be young forever.

  1. :) This post made me smile, Mia. I am glad that you want to stay a kid in some ways. It's a good way to be, I think...

Being exactly 20 years ahead of you in this whole growing up thing (when I'm 83 and you're 63, it won't seem that different, huh?), I can say it's really not too bad. Being responsible sucks sometimes, but it can also be really fun. Like when I'm responsible for feeding my kids dinner, and I decide that dinner = ice cream. Yes, I have to work, but I am lucky to have discovered what I love doing at such a young age. Teaching is a great job that keeps me thinking, creating, and learning. You would be a great teacher! I can't promise you that you'll make a lot of $$, but you will never be bored and you'll always feel like you're doing something that matters.
